It’s really hard seeing a waiting list for people who are waiting or have requested a bed in the hospice and knowing that we don’t have space. We sometimes just don’t have enough beds or enough staff because it costs money that we don’t have. Similarly, we may have patients that are ready to be discharged but we can’t do that because there is no social care input available. There are blocks everywhere and services are struggling with being underfunded.
I didn’t realise just how much it costs for even the most basic of equipment. Working in a big NHS Trust, you don’t appreciate the cost of medications and equipment because you don’t get to see the price we are charged. In a hospice, every single item is paid for by money that we have raised so we are always really careful not to waste things. If we do drop something, we are annoyed that it has cost us maybe an extra 40p to replace it! We value each donation, and we take pride in our work to make sure we aren’t wasteful. Continued support and kindness from the people of Warrington is really important to us so that we don’t have to compromise on patient care. That’s why we are running our National Nurses Campaign, because we need your help to raise enough money so that we can keep caring for our patients.
