Sophie's Story

A regular fundraiser, Sophie will be walking 250 miles in March 2022 to raise money for St. Rocco's

My name is Sophie and I wanted to share with you what St Rocco’s Hospice means to me and why I have challenged myself to walk 250 miles in March 2022 in memory of my grandad, Michael.

My grandad made the best trifle.  He supported Liverpool, enjoyed going to watch live rugby matches and liked watching the F1 in peace.  I remember my grandad had a great sense of humour; he called me “thing” and he was fun to be around.

In April 2012 we received the devastating news that my grandad had cancer in his stomach, kidney and bones.  It was a McMillan nurse that first talked about St Rocco’s Hospice to us and said that they would help sort out my grandad’s medication.  He was reluctant at first saying it was just a place to go to die.  However, he soon changed his mind when he was admitted in July 2012.  My grandad loved sitting in the garden watching the squirrels.  I remember how the hospice staff would take time to sit and chat with him.

My grandad stayed at St Rocco’s for a month and he was only meant to stay for a few days!  He sadly passed away in September 2012 and I miss him dearly.

As a way of remembering my grandad and for the wonderful care he received, I like to take part in fundraising activities to raise vital funds that help care for other people’s loved ones at a time that they need it most.
